Bitter Fruit by Paul Fusco is a Magnum In Motion interactive essay. In November 2003 Magnum photographer Paul Fusco began his essay on the funerals of the soldiers killed in Iraq. He travelled to some 27 different cities and towns from Florida to Minnesota, Maine and New York. This is his personal protest against government attempts to downplay the costs of war. Its an Audio essay along with photographs so plug in your earphones or speakers.

A few excerpts from the essay:

“…Its very difficult for me, emotionally, I’ve tried all of my career to get photographs of people that were honest and true and have great depth about who they were at the moment I photograph them........ I wasn't prepared for this.

…and I don’t think they were either...”

“…Why don't we see it in the newspapers? See a lot of pictures of the people wounded in London, but they're not Americans so we can see them. See a lot of people killed by the tsunami, we can see their faces can't see Americans, can see a lot of Iraqi’s being killed that’s ok, can't see Americans
we are being lied to because the consequences of the truth would be too horrible for us to bear rightfully...and maybe something would happen...it would be just and right and positive but....it would not be good for the administration…”

"…I’m doing it for us; I’m doing it for the people. That loss, that pain, that suffering we've got to understand that. We're responsible, we're committed we…we should be committed to understanding the loss that's happening in this awful war."
